Drugstore Primer Test Drive: L'Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base

This is my very first drugstore primer and I wasn't sure what to expect.

The L'oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base ($12 for 15ml) is very smooth and evens out fine lines. It fills in the ridges of your skin creating a flat surface for foundation application. The formula is interesting; it feels part creamy and part silicone-y. It's lightweight on the skin so you hardly feel it.

I was really impressed by how well it hides the fine lines. Extremely impressive for a drugstore product. It's good for fine lines or enlarged pores but does nothing for discoloration. I did noticed that it has a tendency to clump if you use too much product. The major let down of this product is actually the packaginig. The opening is small making it hard to reach the product after the first few uses. It didn't come with a spatula or any other tools.

Overall, I rather pay a little more for something that won't clump and is easier to get to. But that's me.

See below for additional pictures including the before and after comparison:

XOXO, M

  1. I'm quite surprised that L'Oréal has products that do actually work, but I can clearly see the difference and I like it, might get it.

  2. Hmmm I wonder what the clumping is caused by? :[ I think I feel the same way, would rather spend a little more for a product with a) better bottle design and b) will not clump on my skin. Thanks for the review, Mona! Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. Love your before/after comparison! if it came with a spatula you would have to clean/sanitize store in a dry sterile place everytime so a product comes with a spatula I just throw it away anyways hahaha...

there are convenient solutions to jar packaging just FYI!
    1) Waxing sticks - they look like small popsicle sticks you can purchase and you can cut them in half, and use them as spatulas and just throw it out or recycle - it's the easiest and most sanitary...

2)Use a Qtip and scoop it out!

  4. I have the same problem getting the primer out of the jar too. I just use a brush now but I know L'oreal put out primers with pumps maybe you'll have a better chance with those?

    Nice review Mona!!

  6. Hi Mona thanks for reviewing this L'oreal Studio Secret Magic Primer. I'm not too keen on the packaging either and feels like double dipping increase of germs. I like a primer that is in a tube form or a pump form. Since you stated that there was clumping is there another primer brand that you would recommend? I'm looking for a decent primer as well. Thanks!

  7. i like this primer, but unfortunately it's effects are not very long lasting...
i.e after priming you have to continue quickly or the product kinda disappears...

  8. I wanted to try this product. Looks like it covers a lot, but sucks to hear that it clumps. I think I'll take your advice and pay a little more for something that's more accessible. Thanks for sharing!

  15. @MeiBelleI'm curious about the revlon ones, will have to look at it next time :) anything with a pump is ideal for a primer

  17. @peonyinloveI love the Guerlain primer but it's expensive. Recently I developed a liking for the Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched base, it's about $50 but comes in a big jar @___@
